Nobix Alert

Quick-Start Guide

We'll assume you already know what Nobix Alert is used for. If not, please review the introduction.

To get going, at least two components are required to be installed. The Nobix Alert server (sends the alerts) and one or more Nobix Alerters (displays the desktop pop-ups). For demo purposes, these may be installed on the same machine, or on separate machines. Note that when you install the Alert Server, the Alerter pop-up software is also installed on that same machine.

You may use the included deployment program, included with the Nobix Alert server, to deploy Alerters to your PCs, or you may choose to run the Alerter installation directly on that PC. Please note that installing an Alerter on a PC does not automatically make it a recipient in the Alert Server's configuration.

Once the Alert Server software is installed, you may use the Messaging Interface on the Nobix Alert server to add one or more Alerter PCs as message recipients.

Then, use the Messaging Interface to construct and send an alert message.

To start the Messaging Interface, on the Windows Start menu:

Select Start → All Programs → Nobix Alert → Nobix Alert Messaging

Quick Steps
  1. Install the Nobix Alert server software on a PC. You may download the server software from the Nobix Alert Download page. Please select the Nobix Alert Server download. When requested by the installation program, enter the activation you generated or were given by Nobix Support.

  2. When you install the server software, the alerter pop-up is also installed on that same machine.

  3. To install an Alerter on other PCs, you may either
    • Run the Nobix Alerter installation directly on a PC, available at the download link above, or...
    • Use the deployment program from the Alert server. To start the Nobix Alerter Deployment program from the Windows Start Menu:
Select Start → All Programs → Nobix Alert → Tools → Alert Pop-Up Deployment

Two things to note here, (1) installing the alerter on a PC does not automatically configure it as a recipient on the alert server, you still have to configure that from the Messaging Interface; and (2) when the alerter is installed on a PC, it automatially becomes operational and does not require the user of that PC to start anything.

  4. Start the messaging interface, on the Windows Start menu:
Select Start → All Programs → Nobix Alert → Nobix Alert Messaging

  5. Select the "Recipients & Distribution" button on the left side of the dialog.

  6. Select the Action menu, New Recipient.

  7. Enter the hostname of the PC that Nobix Alerter is installed on. You may leave the other fields empty for now. Press the Add button.

  8. Select the "Send a Message" button on the left side of the dialog.

  9. Select the Recipient you just added in the dropdown list.

  10. Enter your desired test message in the HTML Message Text box.

  11. Press the "Send Now" button.

  12. The alert message should now be displayed on the PC where the Alerter software is installed.

User Licensing

Nobix Alert Server is licensed for a specific number of recipients using an activation key. If the number of recipients exceeds the licensed quantity, various warning messages are generated. Alert Server will not distribute messages to more recipients than allowed by its license. The number of recipients licensed may be viewed in the Help → About dialog in the Messaging Interface.
