Emailing with JobPak

JobPak has the ability to email $STDLISTs (with JobRescue) and reports (with ElectroPage) to your users after the spoolfile has been processed. You can configure it so that the entire spoolfile is emailed, or just a one-line note saying that the file is now ready. Typically the emails that contain spoolfiles are sent to a user's desktop. Emails with just a one-liner can be sent anywhere, including cell phones and other capabable devices.

How it Works

After JobPak is finished processing a spoolfile, it checks the configuration for the spoolfile it just processed. If that spoolfile has email configured for it, the program MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD is used to deliver the email. MAILSMTP sends the email through your mail server to the email addresses you configured.

First, we'll look at the differences between how this works on 6.1D vs. 6.1F. Second, we will gather the information necessary to allow us to configure email features. And last, we will walk through the steps necessary to get email up and running for JobPak.

Plan on about 30 minutes from beginning to end. You should already know who the recipients are going to be (their email addresses).

Differences between JobPak 61.D and 6.1F

How MAILSMTP works internally and the actual mail delivery depends on which version of JobPak you are running. The main differences are:

      6.1D 6.1F
Spoolfile sent as Embedded in email body As an attachment
Email Server Set as a CI variable Set in JobPak configuration
Because of the differences in how the two versions operate, the initial setup and configuration is a little different. Before you begin using email with JobPak, there are some things you will need to determine, and 6.1D users will have to update a program:
What Version of JobPak?

Sign on as MGR.NSD and execute the command:

      PRINT BUILD.JPAK.NSD

    It should look something like

      "@(#)JobPak_6.1F_Tape_Created_(2010/01/01)"

If it says 6.1F then it's 6.1F, and if it doesn't say 6.1F, then it is 6.1D or earlier.

Email Server IP Address

If you don't already know this value, then ask your email admin or whoever is responsible for email configuration. If you only know the hostname and not the IP, use NSLOOKUP (from a command prompt) on your PC to find the IP address.

HP3000 IP Address

If you don't know the IP address of your HP3000, execute the command

      SHOWVAR HPLOCIPADDR

This value may need to be configured in your email server's relay list, in order to allow the HP3000 to send email through your email server. Check with your email administrator to ensure that the HP3000 is allowed to send email through the email server.

6.1D Program Update

Version 6.1D requires a program update which makes the configuration much easier than the original email program. The replacement for MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD may be downloaded at MAILSMTP.JPAK61D.20100118.LBL. This program file is in Reflection “label” format, ready to upload to your MPE machine. If you don’t use Reflection, please let me know so that we can provide the file to you in another format. When you transfer the file to the 3000 please ensure the transfer type is set to “labels”. The enclosed program file replaces MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD. You can leave JobPak running when you replace the program.

To determine the version of the MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD program, you may use the WHAT program, as in:

      MPE: WHAT.PUB.NSD MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD
      MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD:
        MAILSMTP 6.1D(2010/01/18) (C) 2001 Nobix
      MPE:

It should have a build date of January 18, 2010 or later.

The following instructions require the use of this updated email program. Do not continue until the MAILSMTP.JPAK.NSD program has been updated.

Configuration

Let's start configuring things, and we'll start with the steps that only pertain to using 6.1D. If you are using 6.1F then skip over the section labeled "For 6.1D Only" and go to "For 6.1F Only".

As always, if you have any questions please don't hesitate to send us an email at support@nobix.com or call us at 1-800-538-3818.

When you are finished adding email addresses to the configuration in the last steps below, you're done. Run a test job or report and check the results.

    For 6.1D Only

You updated the MAILSMTP program outlined in the step above, right? If not, don't continue.

Sign on as MGR.NSD. This is where we set the value of your email server's IP address. Edit the JobPak JCL file JOBPAK.JPAK.NSD (or whatever JCL you use to start JobPak) and insert a new line somewhere after the JOB command, as in:

      !SETVAR EMAILSERVER “xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx”

Where the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx is the IP address of your email server. Then stop and restart the JobPak job so that the SETVAR becomes effective.

    For 6.1F Only
6.1F stores your email server's IP address in its configuration. Sign on as MGR.NSD. Enter the command
    1. CONFIGIX.JPAK
    2. Press ENTER on "Configure Global Values..."
    3. Highlight "Miscellaneous System Values" and press ENTER
    4. Using the TAB key, go to the field "SMTP Mail Server Hostname". Do not use the arrow keys on this screen.
    5. Enter your email server's IP address or hostname
    6. Tab to the OKAY field
    7. Press ENTER
    8. Press F8
    9. Press F8
    10. Press ENTER
    11. Press ENTER

    Steps for 6.1D and 6.1F

    Configure JobPak's Sender Address

CONFIGIX is used to configure the email ID for JobPak. This is the value that is used as the "sender's" address from the JobPak job -- the address the user thinks the email came from.

It does not have to be a real mailbox, however if your email server cannot deliever the email, it will try to send a non delivery message to the sender. If the sender isn't a real address, no one will get the NDR. Therefore, you may wish to configure a real address as the sender that JobPak uses.

Sign on as MGR.NSD and enter the command:
    1. CONFIGIX.JPAK
    2. Press ENTER on "Configure Global Values..."
    3. Highlight "Miscellaneous System Values" and press ENTER
    4. Using the TAB key, go to the field "JobPak Internet Mail ID". Do not use the arrow keys on this screen.
    5. Enter the email address that you wish JobPak email to appear to come from. Do not use anything with @nobix.com, we don't really want your undelivered email.
    6. Tab to the OKAY field
    7. Press ENTER
    8. Press F8
    9. Press F8
    10. Press ENTER
    11. Press ENTER

Configure a Recipient for a Spoolfile

CONFIGIX is used to configure the relationship between which job or report gets sent to who. Job and report specific entries in CONFIGIX are the dialogs that are used. To send a $STDLIST to a user, you will want to go to a job specific entry, and to send a report you'd go to a report specific entry. If you don't have any job or report specific entries already set up, then you should probably do that before we continue here. The JobPak docs are here.

In this section, there are two different configurable options that may be set. One is sending the entire spoolfile (L) or sending just a one-line note that the spoolfile is available (N). The other is when to send it, that being when an exception condition exists (E), or when an exception does not exist (Space).

6.1F users can also specify an @ for the exception condition so that the spoolfile is sent regardless of the exception condition. 6.1D users who want the spoolfile always sent will have to make two entries, one with the "E" and one with the space. It will be more clear when we look at the configuration screen.

Now that you are totally confused but ready to continue, sign on as MGR.NSD.

    1. CONFIGIX.JPAK
    2. Highlight either "Job Specific" or "Report Specific", then press ENTER
    3. Highlight the entry for the spoolfile you wish to send, then press ENTER
    4. Highlight the entry "E-Mail Distribution", then press ENTER
    5. If there are no entries confgured, you will see "This table is currently empty"
    6. Press the F1 "Add Item" key.
    7. Enter an "N" to send a one line note, or an "L" to send the entire spoolfile. The cursor advances to the next field automatically.
    8. Enter an "E" to send only when an exception, a Space for only when a non-exception. 6.1F users can use an @ to always send the file.
    9. Enter the recipient's email address for this spoolfile.
    10. Tab to the OKAY field
    11. Press ENTER
    12. If you have more entries to add for this same spoolfile, press F1 and repeat the above steps, otherwise press F8.
    13. Press F8. If you wish, you may now select another spoolfile and repeat the steps above, or continue below and save the configuration.
    14. Press F8.
    15. Press F8
    16. Press ENTER
    17. Press ENTER
