Exchange Email Mailbox Monitor Download

This monitor package checks one or more Exchange Server 2007 / 2010 mailboxes for inbox email messages. If any messages are found, an alert trigger is sent to PageAlert and the message is moved out of the inbox to another designated folder.

Additionally, monitored email is tested for a PageAlert cancellation phrase. If the cancellation phrase is found, the alert number in the phrase is cancelled and a new alert is not triggered.

Note that this email monitor requires Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 be installed on the PageAlert Server system.

Overview

The PageAlert executable ReadEmail is run as an event monitor by PageAlert. The recommended frequency is between 30 and 60 seconds. ReadEmail uses a text configuration file named mailboxes.txt. Mailboxes.txt contains the name or names of the mailbox inboxes that should be monitored for messages. Also contained in the file is access information required to read the mailbox. Multiple inboxes may specified residing on multiple Exchange Server installations. Exchange Web Services must be installed and running on the Exchange Server. PageAlert does not need to be installed on the Exchange Server machine.

When a monitored mailbox receives email into its inbox, ReadEmail passes the message to a script named StartAlert.vbs. StartAlert.vbs determines if the message is a cancellation message or not. If a cancellation message, StartAlert runs the PageAlert nPage program to cancel the specified page number. If not a cancellation message, a new alert is sent via nPage to the PageAlert Server, passing the sender and recipient addresses, and the message subject.

The PageAlert cancellation phrase is of the form:

      CANCEL ALERT 1234

where the "1234" is the page number of the alert that should be cancelled. The cancellation phrase can appear anywhere in the message.

Activity and errors are logged to StartAlert.log and MailboxProcess.log, both in the log folder.

Keep in mind:

  • Every new monitored email will send an alert trigger unless the message contains the cancellation phrase.
  • All monitored email is moved out of the inbox for the mailbox address after it is read by ReadEmail.
  • Trigger messages that do not match a Notification Entry are ignored.

The download is a self-extracting executable that contains the readme file ReadEmail.README.txt

The download comes with an example mailboxes.txt configuration file, which contains sample entries.
